The scholars Qian Wang, Jiehua He, Leyao Wang, and Ruipeng Tong applied gray rhino theory in their study of safety professionals in large Chinese enterprises, Constructing cognitive model in the framework of gray rhino risk: Based on competition data for safety professionals in large Chinese enterprises, to be published in print in the February 26 issue of Reliability Engineering & System Safety .
“In recent years, the gray rhino metaphor has been extensively applied in the fields of social risk governance and work safety. For example, it is used in community resilience building and risk assessment of engineering projects under gray rhino event,” the authors wrote. “As the transition from passive management to active management, it is of significance to develop a cognitive model within the framework of gray rhino risk, which can provide strong theoretical support and practical guidance for organizational safety management and individual risk cognition.”
They continue: “Individuals or organizations cope with uncertain risk through the close connection between risk cognition and risk management. Moreover, the risk gradient management model and the gray rhino risk framework provide new ideas for the study of cognitive models. Specifically, the gray rhino theory serves as a bridge between individual risk cognition and organizational safety management, and functions as a theoretical lens to integrate the information processing process and hierarchical management stages to construct a multidimensional risk cognitive model. “
