Welcome to My Gray Rhino, a new blog featuring behavioral strategies to help you to head off the obvious problems that don’t get the attention you know they should.
The image of the bird on the rhino’s tush, taken by a friend on safari, seemed appropriate to me for this blog. That little bird OWNS the rhino.
The running theme of this blog is individuals, leaders, and experts who have a thing or to to share about owning your gray rhinos -ideally before you get trampled, but also about learning from experience when you do get trampled. I’ve asked for contributions from people I know and respect who have faced down their own gray rhinos and from those who help others to do so.
Because gray rhinos in organizations and the world often are the result of the magnified effects of billions of individual gray rhinos, I felt it was important to start this blog with a personal story.
So I asked Regina Rodriguez-Martin if I could adapt a post she did on her own blog about the end of her marriage being a gray rhino that was foreseeable -unfortunately seemingly by everyone but her. When we met and I told her about gray rhinos, she immediately “got it.” I often tell her story when speaking in public about how gray rhinos apply to our personal lives as well as to corporate bungling and 30,000-foot global policy crises.
Future posts will include insights from partners and advisors to Gray Rhino & Company as well as individuals and thought leaders from all walks of life and specialties.
